ABOUT THE PROJECT

Burke Mountain Community Centre is a new recreation, cultural, and community facility designed to serve Coquitlam’s growing northeast neighbourhoods. The development will bring together an aquatic centre, double gymnasium, fitness facilities, multi-purpose spaces, and a new Coquitlam Public Library branch.

Integrated with Burke Village Park, the facility is designed as a connected community destination that responds to its mountainside setting. The project incorporates accessible design, climate resilience, and sustainability, with a goal of achieving Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Gold certification and the Zero Carbon Building Design Standard.

FUNDING & GRANTS

The project has received funding commitments and allocations from federal, provincial, and municipal sources. Federal funding of up to $67.4 million has been announced through the Build Communities Strong Fund, alongside a $10 million provincial contribution and $4.6 million allocated by the City from its Housing Accelerator Fund funding.

INDIGENOUS ENGAGEMENT

The project is located on the traditional territories of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm and q̓ic̓əy̓ peoples. The architectural approach draws inspiration from the natural landscape and cultural connections to place, incorporating materiality, colours, and textures informed by the surrounding environment.

The City of Coquitlam is collaborating with kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation to develop cultural recognitions that will be incorporated into the completed facility.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

Following the official groundbreaking in May 2026, site preparation and excavation are underway. Erosion and sediment controls, along with a water treatment system, have been installed to manage stormwater and protect nearby waterways.

With the design completed in September 2026, full building construction is anticipated to begin later in the year. The community centre and adjacent Burke Village Park are scheduled to open in 2029.
